Nigeria’s Segun Toriola began his pursuit of a seventh straight Olympic Games appearance by cruising through to the quarter-finals of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) African Qualification tournament in Khartoum, Sudan.

The four-time All-Africa Games singles champion holds the Nigerian record for participation at the Olympics, with the 41-year-old having competed at every Games since Barcelona 1992.

Having secured straight games victories over Kenya’s Anthony Ringui and home favourite Abdelgadir Ahmed Hussin in his qualification group, Toriola was granted a bye through the last 16 round.

Ahead of the second day of competition, the Nigerian knows two victories will see him secure one of two berths on offer for Rio 2016.

He will take on Aissa Belkadi in the last eight, after the Algerian earned an 11-2, 11-5, 11-9, 11-8 win over Ghana’s Derek Abrefa.

Congo’s Suraju Saka, who was beaten at the first round of Beijing 2008 and London 2012, also battled past Ghanaian opposition to reach the quarter-finals as he overcame Felix Lartey 8-11, 15-13, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10.

Togo’s Mawussi Abgetoglo earned an 11-9, 11-6, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6 win over the Ivory Coast’s Kanate Ali to set up a quarter-final tie with Madagascar’s Jonathan Nativel.

The final last eight tie will see Tunisia’s Adem Hmam face Morocco’s Mounaim Tirselt, after they defeated Libya’s Adir Abushuwashi and Djibouti’s Abdourazack Farah in their respective ties.
