The duo, who finished with a score of 141.88 to secure the title, are back in training immediately with the International Skating Union (ISU) World Junior Figure Skating Championships, which take place from March 14 to 20 in Debrecen, Hungary, in mind.

"It will be a difficult competition but we will do our best," Smirnov said.

"We really liked our programme here but there is not one part of it I could pick out that won us the gold."

He was roared on by mum Tatyana and dad Sergei who were up in the stands watching the competition with his sister Bella.

The American pair of Chloe Lewis and Logan Bye skated next and did enough for the silver medal with a score of 136.37.

"The programme went by so quickly and by the end we were ecstatic," said Bye.

The bronze went to Anastasiya Skoptcova of Russia and Kyrill Aleshin, who were awarded a total of 134.62 points.

"Going last would normally not be a problem but the pressure got to my partner," Alesnin admitted.

In the women's individual event, Russia's 14-year-old skating prodigy Polina Tsurskaya is surely a name for the future after she clinched gold with a score of 186.04. 

She has enjoyed a stellar unbeaten season and took the Lillehammer 2016 crown with an impressive routine packed full of grace and agility.

"I am proud that because of me our national anthem was played," Tsurskaya said.

"I hope everyone at home will give me warm greetings when I return to Moscow."

Silver medallist Maria Sotskova was left to rue a shaky short programme but still came up from eighth to finish in the silver medal position.

"I am very happy to get a medal because my short programme was not perfect," she said.

Bronze medallist Elizabet Tsurnbaeva skated with the national Kazakh colours in her hair on her way to recording a score of 167.88.
