Olympic champion Marielle Thompson claimed her fourth win of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Cross World Cup season after triumphing in today’s event in Idre Fjall, Sweden.

The Canadian's victory came after Sweden’s Anna Holmlund, the winner of yesterday’s event, failed to qualify for a big final for the first time this season.

Holmlund’s compatriot Sandra Naeslund finished in second, while Alizee Baron of France completed the podium.

"I tried to ski my best all day today and be patient with the course," said Thompson.

"There were opportunities to make big moves on the bottom portion of the track which I capitalised on a couple of times today.

"The track was a lot faster today and the weather was perfect.

"It could not have been a better day."

Thompson has closed the gap on overall World Cup leader Holmlund to 208 points, but with three of this season’s final five races cancelled, it is unlikely she will catch the Swede, who has 815 points.

In the men's competition, Sweden’s Victor Öhling Norberg won gold on home snow with Austrian Thomas Zangerl and Switzerland's Jonas Lenherr rounding off the top three.

France’s Jean-Frédéric Chapuis remains top of the overall World Cup standings with 584 points, despite not finishing in Idre Fjall.

Canada’s Brady Leman, who came sixth today, is 74 points behind in second, while Öhling Norberg is fifth, 287 points off the pace.

The FIS Ski Cross World Cup season is set to resume in Pyeongchang, hosts of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, later this month.

Qualification is scheduled for February 26 with the finals taking place two days later.
