San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly will join a tour of American military bases in Europe and the Middle East as part of a programme organised by Military Appreciation Partnerships (MAP).

The trip will see Kelly, who took up his post in January, join fellow American football coaches Troy Calhoun and Chris Creighton in attending the various bases.

Kelly has previously participated in the tour, which will enable some of the military to be able to play the game, with the 49ers having also donated a t-shirts, hats, and other clothing for distribution.

"I get more out of the trip than I give,” said Kelly, the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013 to 2015.

“It is an honour to visit our service men and women."

The tour will be led by the United States’ Air Force’s Al Hunt, which will be supported by the Association with Armed Forces Entertainment.

Around a week will be spent travelling to the bases, with approximately 10,000 to 15,000 troops expected to be visited as part of the programme.

Autograph, photo opportunities, question and answer sessions will all be held, while flag football games will also take place.

The travelling party will also visit several military hospitals throughout the course of the week.

Patrick Steenberge, a former quarterback for the University of Notre Dame, will be part of the programme having established Global Football.

His company hold competitive events for amateur athletes worldwide, with American football having been played in 23 countries on six continents since 1996.

"Of all the events I have been fortunate to manage and be a part of during the past 20 years, this MAP Coaches Tour has to be the most gratifying," said Steenberge.

"The active military men and women we are visiting in faraway bases are dedicating the best years of their lives in defence of our country so that we can all enjoy the freedom to coach, organise, play and enjoy the great sport of football.

"This visit is just a small way to say thank you, and I am proud to share this journey and experience with notable coaches like Chip Kelly, Troy Calhoun and long-time Global Football travel partner Chris Creighton."
