Shooter Abdulla Sultan Alaryani has been named as the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Allianz Athlete of the Month for January.

The 45-year-old from the United Arab Emirates excelled at his home IPC Shooting World Cup in Al-Ain, winning two individual gold medals in the men’s 10 metre air rifle standing SH1 and the 50m rifle three positions competitions.

Those successes helped his country win team gold, and he also added a silver medal in the mixed 50m rifle prone SH1 - the discipline he won at London 2012.

He won the Allianz award, which is decided after a public vote on the IPC's website, with a massive 83 per cent of the vote.

Marie Bochet, another skier, was third with three per cent after extending her unbeaten run in the women’s standing field, while Great Britain's wheelchair tennis star Gordon Reid picked up two per cent after winning the Australian Open.

Another Briton, sailor Helena Lucas, received one per cent of the vote after winning gold in the 2.4mR class at the World Cup in Miami.

All of the nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees and International Federations.
