Russia’s Petr Medulich claimed his maiden International Ski Federation (FIS) Freestyle World Cup win as he produced a superb display to clinch victory in the aerials event at Deer Valley in the United States.

Medulich, competing in his 18th World Cup competition, amassed a formidable score of 128.05 points to top the podium ahead of Ukraine’s Oleksandr Abramenko, who finished second with 124.89.

Japan’s Naoya Tabara secured bronze as he sealed the final spot on the podium thanks to recording a score of 123.53.

The Russian’s triumph elevated him to third place on the overall aerials standings as he now has 207 points, 38 adrift of current leader Abramenko.

The 24-year-old performed his own version of the double-full-full-full trick to ensure he took home his first-ever World Cup gold.

“It’s my first victory, and I’m so happy to do it here (in Deer Valley),” Medulich said.

“I just tried to concentrate on every jump, not think about that it was the superfinal, and do every jump as best as I could do it.”

China’s Zhang Xin reigned supreme in the women’s competition as she posted a score of 99.40 to edge Australia’s Danielle Scott.

Scott, World Championships bronze medallist in 2013, had to settle for silver on 97.29 points, while home favourite Ashley Caldwell gave the Deer Valley crowd something to cheer as she secured bronze with 96.79 points.

The Australian competitor looked as though she might have done enough to top the podium but Zhang was able to better her score to take a dramatic victory.

“This weekend was very challenging," Caldwell said.

"I was dealing with a shin injury the entire time.

“I crashed a lot and I hadn’t done triples since China.

“Mentally, physically, emotionally, it was all very challenging, but at the end of the day the adversity makes it fun."

Caldwell remains the overall leader on 264 points but Zhang’s win saw the Chinese skier cut the deficit to 32 points as she sits in second on 232.

The event in Deer Valley continues tomorrow with men’s and women’s dual moguls action.
