Mexican Swimming Federation (FMN) President Kiril Todorov has resigned from his role as vice-chairman of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Technical Committee following the governing body suspending the country.

FINA announced the "temporary suspension" of the FMN during the first meeting of their Bureau this year, with the decision due to the Federation "breaking contractual obligations" by withdrawing last February as host of the 2017 FINA World Championships.

Guadalajara had been set to stage the showpiece event but withdrew after stating the Championships would be too costly in light of falling oil prices.

Hungarian capital Budapest, a contender for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, ultimately stepped into the breach as replacement host.

Mexico is one of three Federations currently suspended by FINA, along with Kuwait and Sri Lanka.

If the three bans have not been lifted beforehand, swimmers from all three nations will have to participate under the FINA or International Olympic Committee flags rather than their respective national ones at this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Todorov has revealed that FINA have sanctioned the Federation with a $5 million (£3.5 million/€4.5 million) fine for their withdrawal from hosting duties.

“[FINA] know that we cannot pay this amount, what do they gain from suspending us?” he said.

“Nothing, we cannot pay it.

“They are putting pressure on the Mexican government through Mexican athletes, this is what FINA is doing.”

Todorov wrote to FINA President Julio Maglione to resign from the Technical Committee.

"Dear Mr. Maglione, please accept this letter as my formal resignation as vice president of the Technical Committee of the FINA swimming as a matter of immediate notification,” he wrote.
