Britain’s Laura Trott is targeting a repeat of her double gold medal success at the London 2012 Olympics when the International Cycling Union (UCI) Track Cycling World Championships gets underway in the same velodrome next month.

The 23-year-old claimed Olympic titles in the women’s team pursuit and omnium events at the Lee Valley VeloPark four-years ago, but will now seek to improve on the silver medals she won in both races at last year’s World Championships in Paris.

Should Trott secure both titles, she would match her performance at the 2012 Championships in Melbourne, which proved a launchpad for her Olympic success later in the year.

“This year’s UCI Track Cycling World Championships will be spectacular,” said Trott.

“It would be amazing to compete in my home city and with the backing of so many fans.

“I’m 100 per cent focussed on making the team and winning gold in the omnium and women’s pursuit.

“It would be the perfect way to start what is hopefully going to be a fantastic year.”

Squads are expected to be announced shortly for the Championships, which are scheduled to take place from March 2 to 6, with organisers revealing that over 48,000 tickets have been sold to date.

It is expected that the ticket sales will rise to over 50,000 in the coming weeks, with the event billed as Britain’s premier international sporting event of 2016.

Men’s and women’s team sprints are expected to garner the most attention on the opening day of the Championships on March 2.

Four world titles will be decided on the next two days of competition, with the home crowd likely to expect success in the team pursuit events, with Britain’s men’s team set to feature four-time Olympic champion Sir Bradley Wiggins.

Individual sprints and the omniums will come to the fore on March 5 and 6, with the men’s madison due to bring competition to a close.

While Britain will be seeking to improve on their tally of three silver medals last year, France will be hoping to replicate the performance which placed them on top of the medals table in 2015, having won five golds and two bronzes.

The Championships are expected to provide a key indicator of how nations are likely to perform at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
