Mexico have been drawn to face Greece and Iran in the men’s 2016 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Olympic Qualifying tournament in Turin.

It follows the country’s suspension having been lifted by thFIBA’s Executive Committee, as revealed by insidethegames last week, allowing their team to compete at the qualifying event in July. 

The Mexican Basketball Federation (ADEMEBA) had been suspended in November due to not being recognised by the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE).

Having been granted the reprieve their men’s team will now head to Turin to take on Greece and Iran in Group A of the qualifier, after the FIBA made the draw for the competition at their headquarters in Mies.

Hosts Italy headline Group B, which also contains Croatia and Tunisia.

Turin was selected as one of three venues to stage men’s Olympic qualifying, with Manila in Philippines and Serbian capital Belgrade also staging competition.

Serbia, fourth at EuroBasket last year, will meet Angola and Puerto Rico in Group A of their event.

Japan, Latvia and the Czech Republic make up Group B.

Turkey, Senegal and Canada have been drawn into Group A in Manila.

The Philippines are due to take on France and New Zealand in Group B.

The top two countries in each group in each tournament will advance to the semi-finals.

The winners of each event will fill the three remaining places in the basketball tournament at Rio 2016.

Competition in Belgrade and Turin is scheduled to take place from July 4 to 9, with action in Manila is being held between July 5 and 10.

FIBA President Horacio Muratore and secretary general and International Olympic Committee member Patrick Baumann were among the key officials present for the draw.

Reigning champions United States and beaten finalists Spain have already gained a men's spot at Rio 2016.

Brazil, Australia, Nigeria, Venezuela, Argentina, Spain, Lithuania and China have also qualified.

French city Nantes is staging the sole women's qualifying tournament with competition due to take place from June 13 to 19, where five countries will claim spots at Rio 2016.

Hosts France have been drawn into Group A alongside Cuba and New Zealand, while Group B consists of Argentina, Cameroon and Turkey.

Belarus, South Korea and Nigeria are scheduled to meet in Group C and China, Spain and Venezuela complete Group D.

The top two nations in each group will advance to the quarter-finals, with the victors then advancing to Rio 2016.

Competition will then continue with the losers due to compete for the right to appear in a fifth place classification match, where the final qualifier will be decided.

Defending champions United States, as well as Serbia, hosts Brazil, Canada, London 2012 bronze medal winners Australia, Japan and Senegal have already booked their places at Rio 2016.
