South Korean technology giants LG Electronics have been announced as the title sponsor of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) 2016 Women's Baseball World Cup.

The agreement was signed at the company’s Twin Towers headquarters in Seoul, with members of the WBSC and the Women's Baseball Association of Korea (WBAK) present.

It expands the existing relationship between LG and WBSC, with both organisations having partnered to deliver the LG Cup, an annual international women's invitational baseball tournament for clubs.

"WBSC is very excited to enter into this new and expanded partnership with LG, a Fortune Global 500 company and industry innovator," said Masaru Yokoo, WBSC baseball marketing director.

"This is a significant accord for WBSC, the Women's Baseball World Cup and women's sport in general, that highlights the continued growth and attraction of international baseball properties that feature the sport's top national teams, across both genders."

The seventh edition of the women’s tournament is due to see 12 countries compete for the title in Gijang County in Busan in South Korea from September 3 to 11.

It represents an increase of four teams from the 2014 edition of the tournament in Japan, where the hosts secured their fourth straight title by beating the United States in the final.

Japan, currently top of the world rankings, will aim to defend their title again at the event which will be broadcast in host nation South Korea on SBS.

The company will showcase matches on their multi-platform network, which WBSC claim make them best positioned to reach the majority of the population.

The WBSC will hope the event showcases baseball’s global appeal after baseball/softball was put forward by the Tokyo 2020 Additional Events Programme Panel for potential inclusion at the Olympic Games, along with karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.
