Cameroon booked their place in the African Nations Championship quarter-finals after securing an impressive 3-1 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in Rwanda.

The Cameroonian team had headed into the tie with the knowledge that a draw against the Group B winners would prove enough to reach the knock-out phase.

However, their prospects of overtaking the DR Congo and winning the group were handed a boost after Yazid Atouba controlled a left wing cross and calmly found the net as the match approached half-time.

DR Congo were back on level terms immediately after the restart with a passing move finished in the penalty area by their striker Jean Makusu.

The match became a frantic affair with Nicolas Moumi putting Cameroon back in front in the 50th minute of the game after volleying Joseph Ngwem’s cross beyond DR Congo’s goalkeeper Ley Matampi, via the crossbar.

Cameroon’s victory and status as group winners was sealed in the 63rd minute, with Samuel Nlend producing a superb chip over Matampi from the edge of the area.

The Cameroonian team will now face Group A runners-up Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals, while DR Congo meet hosts Rwanda.

Angola and Ethiopia were left to battle for third position in Group B, with both teams having yet to secure a victory.

Having lost both of their ties, Angola were hoping to pick up their first point of the competition and the prospects looked positive when Manuel David Afonso put them into the lead early in the second half.

He doubled his tally in the 72nd minute and although Seyoum Tesfaye pulled a goal back in the closing minutes, Angola held on to end third in the group.

The tournament, now in its fourth edition, differs from the more elite Africa Cup of Nations, as only players who represent clubs on the continent are allowed to take part.

Defending champions Libya are not participating after failing to come through qualification.
