The host nation ended the competition, which acted as a test event for the upcoming Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, with 10 medals, consisting of four golds, two silvers and four bronzes.

Their first gold medal of the day came courtesy of Joseano Felipe, who triumphed in the men’s up to 107 kilograms category with a 206kg lift.

Felipe, now seventh in the world rankings, explained his schedule with less than eight months to go until the Paralympics.

"Training two to three hours a day and always tracing my goals, both by competition and by weight lifted," he said.

"The routine is a lot of training, rest and good nutrition.

"Everything is going well and I'm fast increasing the load on the bar.

"I am confident to get this place in Rio 2016."

Brazil’s second gold medal of the day came in the combined women’s up to 79kg, up to 86kg and over 86kg event, which was won by Marcia Menezes with a score of 93.70 points. 

The final standings were determined by the AH formula, a system used to rank athletes when body weight categories are combined.

Menezes targeted a 117kg lift, but after lifting 110kg in the first round, she failed to complete her second and third attempt.

"We have one more chance in Malaysia [last stage of the World Cup] and there I will give the same effort," said Menezes, world bronze medallist in the up to 79kg,

"My coach always reminds me that in training I do a lot more than the competition.

"I arrived here very confident because 110kg and 112kg weight is easy for me, but I lacked a bit of concentration."

Chile’s Marion Alejandra Serrano Guajardo took silver with 57.03 points, setting a new junior world and Americas record with a 65kg lift.

Guajardo’s team-mate Maria Antoineta Ortiz secured gold in the women’s up to 67kg with a 91kg lift, while Brazil’s Terezinha Mulato claimed silver with 87kg and Colombia’s Gladys Sanchez Vera came third with 85kg.

Hungary’s Sandor Sas was victorious in the men’s over 107kg with a 195kg haul and was joined on the podium by Colombia’s Jhon Freddy Castaneda Velasquez, silver medallist with 180kg, and Brazil’s Jose Silva, bronze medallist with 177kg.

Completing the top three in the medals table were Chile with two golds, five silvers and one bronze, and Colombia with two golds, two silvers and one bronze.

The next IPC Powerlifting World Cup is due to take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates between February 15 and 19, followed by the final stage in Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur from February 24 to 28.

All three World Cups give athletes the opportunity to increase their Paralympic rankings for Rio 2016.

The top eight men and highest six ranked women in each weight category on February 29, according to the IPC Powerlifting rankings, will be granted berths at the Games.
