The Democratic Republic of Congo ensured a quarter-final berth at the 2016 African Nations Championship in Rwanda thanks to a 4-2 victory against Angola, coupled with a goalless draw between Cameroon and Ethiopia.

The results put DR Congo top of Group B on six points and see Angola eliminated after suffering two defeats in as many matches.

A draw for Cameroon in their final match against DR Congo on Monday (January 25) will guarantee them qualification for the last-eight, but if they lose, Ethiopia could snatch second spot on goal difference with victory against Angola.

DR Congo, winners of the inaugural edition of the Championship in 2009, were 3-0 ahead by half-time against neighbouring country Angola at the Stade Huye in Butare.

Nelson Munganga, Elia Meschak and Jonathan Bolingi all got their names on the scoresheet before Gelson’s goal in the 76th minute gave Angola a glimmer of hope.

Merveille Bope promptly put to bed any prospect of a comeback, but there was still time for a late Angola consolation as DR Congo captain Joel Kimwaki scored an own goal six minutes from time.

Kick-off in the day’s second game was delayed by 10 minutes due to floodlight failure, but when the match got under way, it was Cameroon who had the better of the first half as they looked to build on their 1-0 win against Angola.

Ethiopia, who lost to DR Conga 3-0 in their first outing, improved after the break but neither side was able to break the deadlock.

Action is scheduled to continue tomorrow at the Stade Régional Nyamirambo in Kigali as Group C leaders Nigeria meet Tunisia after Niger’s encounter with Guinea.

The tournament, now its fourth edition, differs from the more elite Africa Cup of Nations, as only players who represent clubs on the continent are allowed to take part.

Defending champions Libya are not participating in the tournament after failing to come through qualification.
