Italian Dorothea Wierer shot clean on her way to a second International Biathlon Union (IBU) World Cup victory of the season today.

The 25-year-old, a bronze medallist in the mixed relay at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, triumphed in the 15 kilometres individual event at Ruhpolding in Germany.

Wierer, who won in the same discipline at the opening World Cup event in Östersund in Sweden, clocked 40 min 19.9 sec to come home ahead of Kaisa Mäkäräinen of Finland, the twice overall champion who was 54.8 sec adrift.

Third place went to overall World Cup leader Gabriela Soukalova, with the Czech biathlete 1:09.9 behind Wierer.

Both Mäkäräinen and Soukalova accrued single penalties which allowed perfect-shot Wierer to take advantage.

She left the final standing stage more than a minute ahead of the rest of the field and avoided calamity on the skis to cruise home.

"When I was coming to the last shooting, I was thinking I was not going to get four times zero," said Wierer.

"I was thinking good-bye red bib.

"But I shot fast, I shoot the best when I shoot fast and not so good when I slow down."

Wierer, who won gold as part of the Italian team relay line-up at this season's second World Cup event in Hochfilzen, Austria, can now look ahead to a home race with the next leg of the season taking place in Antholz-Anterselva.

"I want to do well there, but there is always a lot of pressure and it can be hard," she said.

"But I am not thinking about that now, just what is happening here in Ruhpolding."

Soukalova, a double silver medallist in Sochi, now has 551 points on top of the standings, with France's Marie Dorin Habert second on 506.

German Franziska Hildebrand is currently third on 466.

Action continues in Ruhpolding tomorrow with the men's 4x7.5km relay.
