It was signed at a ceremony in Athens today attended by Greece's ETU President Sakis Pragalos and EBU Head of Indoor Sports Ingolfur Hannesson.

Hellenic Olympic Comittee Spyros Capralos was among others present at the event in the shadow of the Acropolis. 

Under the terms of the deal, EBU will enjoy exclusive media rights on radio, television and digital platforms for the ETU Senior European Champianships in the Swiss lakeside town, due to take place from May 19 to 22.

It continues a partnership first begun in 2013.

"The significance of our collaboration with EBU, the biggest media alliance in Europe, is that taekwondo has now the opportunity to build communication bridges between every Olympic event," said Pragalos.

"The high-standards, the status and classification of EBU throughout Europe, as well as worldwide, ensure the quality of broadcasting services and demonstrate partners of similar magnitude. 

"This collaboration will communicate the foremost image of taekwondo to all European countries and establish the sport in the viewers’ preferences.”

Eurovision, the EBU’s operational arm,  will also be the exclusive service provider for worldwide distribution in an agreement which "guarantees maximum exposure for the Olympic sport of taekwondo". 

It also act as the main sponsor for the event, with the parties already committed to further cooperation beyond the Championships.

“We are delighted to have created this opportunity to work with the ETU to develop taekwondo and serve the best interests of the sport and our partner, the ETU," said Hannesson. 

"This partnership renewal is based on a global multi-service approach from content creation to worldwide distribution.

"Through the EBU, viewers are guaranteed maximum free-to-air access and increased visibility of the sport.”

The announcement of the deal comes ahead of a busy Olympic year for the sport, which is due to begin on Saturday (January 16) with a two-day European Qualification Tournament in Istanbul.
