Flachau in Austria has stepped in to replace Ofterschwang as hosts of the upcoming women’s International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Skiing World Cup on January 16 and 17.

Competition had been due to take place in the German ski resort on the same dates but warm weather and a lack of snow had forced the FIS to cancel the scheduled races.

The event had been due to include women’s giant slalom and slalom races which will now be moved to neighbouring country Austria.

A women’s slalom race was already scheduled to take place in Flachau on January 12, but the Austrian resort will now host a double-bill of action, with the cancelled slalom race from Ofterschwang rescheduled for January 15.

Meanwhile, the giant slalom will take place on January 17 to complete the schedule.

Weather conditions across Europe have wreaked havoc on the FIS World Cup calendar in early 2016, forcing the cancellation, postponement and rearrangement of several events.

Among the events affected were the Alpine Skiing World Cup races planned for Croatia's capital Zagreb on January 3 and 6, which the governing body re-arranged in Santa Caterina in Italy.

It was announced on Monday (January 4) that the Ski Cross World Cup in La Plagne, France, on January 15 and 16 had been switched to Watles, with the competition now taking place on January 16 and 17.

The men's giant slalom race in the Swiss resort of Adelboden was cancelled yesterday (Saturday) due to fog and rain rendering the course unsafe for competition.

There are no plans to reschedule the race.

The FIS have not been the only Federation to have their events disrupted by warm weather as the International Biathlon Union (IBU) were forced to move their fourth World Cup event of the season across Germany, from Oberhof to Ruhpolding.
