Double T44 world sprint champion Richard Browne of the United States has been injured in a car crash in Florida after his vehicle was hit by a lorry, his manager Ian Byers has announced.

Browne, who claimed gold in the 100 and 200 metres events at the 2015 International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships in Doha in world record times of 10.61sec and 21.27 respectively, suffered broken ribs and a heavy concussion when a lorry, which had failed to stop at a red light, collided with his car.

The 24-year-old from Jackson, Mississippi, spent two nights in hospital and is now recuperating at home in Florida, according to Byers.

Byers, who works for 17 Management, says he remains “confident” the injuries won't jeopardise Browne's chances of competing at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, although he admitted it could impact his preparations.

“Richard is badly shaken up and in a lot of pain at the moment, but he was very lucky,” a statement from Byers read.

“Doctors have advised that he should rest for three weeks, which will impact on his winter training and may mean that we have to review his early season race plans.

“However, Richard has overcome far greater adversity in his life and I am confident that he will be in top shape and ready to challenge for a place on the US Olympic team and to contend for two individual gold medals at the Rio Paralympic Games.”

Browne has made no secret of his desire to top the podium in Brazil in the summer.

“I am not eyeing anything less than a gold medal at the Rio Games over both 100 and 200m,” he said recently to IBNLive.

“This is my only and ultimate target.”

Brown harboured hopes of becoming a professional American football player until a freak accident while running in 2009 forced the eventual amputation of the lower part of his right leg.

He underwent 13 surgeries in an attempt to fix the injury before he decided to have the affected area amputated.
