Archery coach and WheelPower volunteer Fred Stevens of Britain has announced his retirement from both roles after 15 years of service to the sport.

Stevens competed for Britain at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing and claimed silver and bronze medals at the World Para Archery Championships in Nymburk, Czech Republic, a year later.

He has since been working with the likes of Chloe Ball-Hopkins, Jessica Stretton and Harriet Little, all of whom are tipped for success at Rio 2016 and beyond, in his role as coach.

“My passion was always archery, I love to see people do well and see people of all levels enjoy it.” Stevens said.

“Even better when it puts a smile on their face.

“It has been an absolute honour to work with WheelPower and everyone else at Stoke Mandeville Stadium and there has been nothing more pleasurable than seeing someone get pleasure from archery.

“I will certainly hope to visit during events and continue following the progress of all the great archers I have worked with.”

Stevens worked as a volunteer for WheelPower, the national organisation for wheelchair sport in Britain, and regularly assisted with events held by the British Wheelchair Archery Association.

He also helped out with the Inter Spinal Unit Games, a sporting competition for newly injured patients, and was involved with WheelPower’s junior sport programme.

“He is an amazing coach and one of the best I have ever had the pleasure to work with,” Archery GB performance coach Helen George said.

“He has been instrumental through WheelPower and LimbPower in his leadership, in bringing on many talented young archers who have considerable potential.

“Apart from being a great performer and winning medals on the international stage, Fred was always there to help listen to, advise and support all his team.

“What really sets Fred apart is the work he has done over the years to help archers from grassroots level to the top.

“It has been a great pleasure working with Fred as he has taught me so much.

“We will all miss him, but he has promised to come and visit us.

“Fred, thank you for everything."
