This year's Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will be televised in Spain on TVE, the national state-owned public service broadcaster, it has been confirmed.

The announcement was made following the signing of a collaboration agreement by the Presidents of the Higher Sports Council, Miguel Cardenal; the Spanish Paralympic Committee, Miguel Carballeda; Spanish Radio Television (RTVE), Jose Antonio Sanchez, and La Liga, Javier Tebas.

RTVE, the corporation of which TVE is a subsidiary, claimed it is committed to providing broad coverage of the Games as part of the agreement through its channels and its website.

This includes the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and the majority of the events featuring Spanish athletes.

In order to fulfil this task, RTVE will send its own technical team to Rio de Janeiro to cover the Games.

At the London 2012 Paralympic Games, TVE dedicated a total of 240 hours of programming, 14 hours a day on its Teledeporte channel and a daily highlights programme was also produced.

There were live and delayed broadcasts of swimming, athletics, and cycling and for the first time in Spain, live coverage of wheelchair basketball and five-a-side football.

On September 7 of last year - the day which marked exactly one year until the Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Paralympics - International Paralympic Committee President Sir Philip Craven targeted achieving a cumulative television audience of four billion for the Paralympic Games.
