Niger Taekwondo Federation chief Issaka Ide has been elected President of the Niger National Olympic and Sports Committee (COSNI), it has been announced.

Ide, who is also first vice-president of the African Taekwondo Union, will be tasked with leading COSNI in the build-up to next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

His appointment as COSNI President has been heralded by World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) head Chungwon Choue, who claimed the entire taekwondo world should celebrate Ide’s election.

The Nigerien is also a member of the WTF Council and is heavily involved in the Global Para-Taekwondo University, which educates taekwondo coaches, instructor and masters with a range of online courses, as he currently sits on the International Board of Advisors.

“It was my tremendous pleasure to be reported that you were elected as the new President of the Niger National Olympic and Sports Committee,” Choue wrote in a letter to Ide.

Choue added: “This achievement should be celebrated within the entire taekwondo families.

“Surely your election is the testament of the hard work you have put into the development of taekwondo and other sports in Niger.

“As a long-term served member of the WTF Council, your election will certainly enhance the image of the WTF and will further increase the awareness of our beloved sport within the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa.

“It is with our joy and pride to have a President of NOC within the seats of the WTF Council, and I hope your election will inspire all other taekwondo families."

The Africancountry's only Olympic medal came when Issake Dabore claimed men’s light welterweight boxing bronze at the 1972 Games in Munich.

Niger sent six athletes to the London 2012 Olympic Games who competed across five sports - athletics, boxing, judo, rowing and swimming.

Rower Hamadou Djibo Issaka became one of the stars of the Games when he participated in the men's single sculls as he finished far behind the rest of the field having only trained for three months prior to the competition, which earned him a rapturous reception from the crowd.
