India have secured three of the four men’s singles medals on offer at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships with Singapore’s Chen Feng posing the only threat to the hosts' hopes of gold at the Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Indoor Stadium in Surat.

Sanil Shetty triumphed in an all-Indian quarter-final with Harmeet Desai, with the match proving to be one of the highlights of the day’s play, as the momentum of the tie shifted constantly throughout the contest.

Desai had the better of the opening stages of the tie, claiming three of the opening four games to look on course for the semi-finals, before the left-handed Shetty began to fight his way back into the contest.

The world number 267 earned back-to-back games to force a decider and completed a stirring comeback to eventually emerge as an 9-11, 4-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-5 winner.

Shetty will face his compatriot Anthony Amalraj for a place in final, after the latter thrashed Abhishek Yadav in another all-Indian quarter-final, 11-4, 11-4, 11-4, 11-2.

Another home favourite, Soumyajit Ghosh, clinched an 11-4, 11-8, 11-6, 12-10 victory over Scotland’s Gavin Rumgay in his quarter-final to set up a tie against Feng,

The Singaporean beat India’s Gnanasekaran Sathiyan 13-11, 9-11, 11-7, 12-10, 4-11, 11-5.

Singapore and India each have two players in the women’s semi-finals, with Zhou Yihan progressing past India’s Shamini Kumaresan in one of the most fiercely contested last eight matches, winning 4-2.

The Singapore player will face India’s Manika Batra after she claimed a straightforward 11-6, 11-6, 2-11, 11-7, 11-2 win over England’s Ho Tin-Tin in their quarter-final encounter.

Mouma Das, meanwhile, became the second home favourite to reach the semi-finals after winning her tie against fellow Indian Pooja Sahasrabudhe 11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 12-10, 8-11, 10-12, 11-8.

She will have to cause an upset against the strong Singaporean Ye Lin, with the world number 57 having battled from two games down to beat Ankita Das 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8.

The tournament is due to conclude tomorrow.
