The Peruvian capital took over the organisation of the 2015 South American Senior, Junior and Youth Championships following the withdrawal of Venezuela.

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) claimed the High Performance Centre, which has been purpose-built for the 2019 Pan American Games, "provided high standard facilities for a perfect competition".

José Quiñones, President of South American Weightlifting Confederation and vice-president of the IWF, said the venue could be used to host the 2018 IWF World Championships, which were awarded to Lima ahead of this year’s edition in Houston.

"I am glad we could welcome the South American countries in Lima, Peru," said Quiñones, who is also President of the Peruvian Olympic Committee. 

"This competition served also as the first weightlifting test event ahead of the 2019 Pan American Games.

"The event was organised in the complex that might also be the venue for the 2018 IWF World Championships - a major event before the Pan American Games."

The South American Championships are held annually and bring together the 10 Member Federations of the South American Weightlifting Confederation.

Brazil claimed a total of six overall gold medals, with two in men’s competition and four in women’s.

Josue Lucas Ferreira Da Silva and Romario Paulo Martins captured the men’s 85 kilogram and 94kg titles respectively.

Aline De Souza Facciolla Ferreira triumphed in the women’s 48kg category, while there was also success in female competition for Alexsandra De Aguiar Goncalves at 53kg, Rosane Dos Reis Santos at 58kg and Monique Maria Lima De Araujo at 75kg.

Hosts Peru came second with five overall gold medals ahead of Chile and Ecuador on two each.

Lima was awarded the 2019 Pan American and Parapan Games in October 2013, four years after losing out to Toronto for the 2015 event.

The city won the right to host the Games for the first time after finishing ahead of Chilean capital Santiago, La Punta in Argentina and Ciudad Bolivar in Venezuela.
