The two-day coaching course saw six participants from Malaysia, the UAE, Slovenia and South Africa successfully complete their training, as they explored rules, classification, safety and integration alongside practical sessions.

They will now aim to utilise their new skills to implement and develop wheelchair fencing in their respective regions.

Classification training was completed by participants from Germany and the UAE, adding to the pool of wheelchair fencing classifiers in Europe and Asia, while referee training was undertaken by 17 people from countries such as Sudan, Egypt, Yemen and Croatia.

The courses ran alongside the IWAS Under-17 Wheelchair Fencing World Championships, allowing the participants to experience international competition first hand. 

The continuous training of wheelchair fencing officials is an ongoing goal of IWAS in the progression and development of the sport worldwide.

Training courses for officials will be held on a regular basis in different locations around the world.

Earlier this year, a collaboration agreement was signed by IWAS and the International Fencing Federation (FIE) to help develop wheelchair fencing.

Having held a first joint event at the 2006 FIE World Championships in Turin, the new agreement, which was signed during the World Championships in Moscow, aims to strengthen the two parties' common goal of promoting and developing the sport.
