The Netherlands booked their place in the final of the Women's World Handball Championships for the first time ever tonight, comfortably beating Poland 30-25 at the Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning.

Awaiting them in the gold medal match is Norway, who beat Romania 35-33 after overtime.

Dutch goalkeeper Tess Wester was in fine form to help The Netherlands go in at half-time with a 15-8 lead.

Poland managed to reduce the deficit to just four goals midway through the second half, but that was as close as they came to a turnaround.

The Netherlands' Nycke Groot was the player of the match and will now look to make her mark in the  final in Herning on Sunday (December 20).

Aiming to stop her will be Norway, winners of the gold medals at the last time Olympic Games, Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Norway emerged triumphant following a tough encounter against Romania, which finished 27-27 at the end of regular time.

It could have been a different story for the Norwegians though had goalkeeper Kari Grimsbo not pulled off a superb save in the final seconds of regular time to deny experienced Romanian player Valentina Ardean Elisei.

Playing at a high tempo, Norway controlled the first half with Stine Oftedal the creative brain and Veronika Kristiansen and Nora Mork the main goalscorers with four and six goals respectively.

They deservedly led 17-14 at the interval, but in the second half, the Romanian defence raised their level as Norway, the 1999 and 2011 world champions, suffered a ten-minute goal drought.

Romania held a two-goal lead at one point but ultimately fell short and will now go up against Poland in the bronze medal match.

Earlier in the placement matches, Russia beat France 31-25, while hosts Denmark defeated Montenegro 28-20.

France are due to meet Montenegro in the battle to avoid finishing last before Russia face Denmark for the right to finish fifth.
