Ssangyong Information & Communications has been announced as an official domestic sponsor of the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics - and are set to develop and operate the official Games websites.

The information and operating services company will also support the organisers in delivering certain Games systems, which it is claimed will form an integral part of the wider integrated Pyeongchang 2018 Games-technology solution.

“We deeply appreciate Ssangyong’s decision to join the sponsorship programme,” said Yeo Hyungkoo, Pyeongchang 2018 secretary general, during a signing ceremony at Ssangyong’s headquarters in South Korean capital Seoul.

“They have a solid reputation as a Korean Sports System Integration company that has accumulated experience developing websites and operational systems for international mega sporting events.

“We believe Ssangyong’s know-how will help us deliver successful Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.”

Ssangyong have an extensive history of supporting international sporting events, having worked on both the Seoul 1986, Busan 2002 and Incheon 2014 Asian Games, as well as the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

The company have also provided their services for large scale events outside of South Korea, including the Doha 2006 and Astana-Almaty 2011 Asian Games.

Having become a domestic sponsor, Ssangyong have been awarded various marketing rights in South Korea such as the use of the “Official Sponsor” intellectual properties, product category exclusivity and use of the Games emblem in promotional activities.

“It is our pleasure to contribute to the Olympic Winter Games Pyeongchang 2018,” said Kim Seung-gi, chief executive of Ssangyong.

“We have provided excellent service levels to many international sports events, and promise to use our world class knowledge and experience to make the 2018 Olympic Winter Games efficient and convenient.”

A lack of domestic sponsors was cited as a major concern for Pyeongchang earlier this year, but deals with three major Korean companies - Hyundai, Samsung Group and Korean Air - have eased much of the concern.

Other local sponsors are manufacturers SK Group, law firm BKL, telecommunications provider KT, Youngone Outdoor's North Face brand, Pagoda Education Group, tractor supplier Daedong Industrial, Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers and online auction and shopping mall Interpark.
