Their team began the two-day competition in stylish fashion as they earned gold in the highlight event having earned a score of 91.3333 from the judges, with Russia ending some way adrift in second after scoring 87.666.

Third place went to Japan, who totalled 86.8333.

The hosts underlined their status as the team to beat after Xu Qianxue and Zhang Xiwen produced a superb display in the thematic duet competition to hold off the challenge of the Italians Costanza Ferro and Linda Cerruti by scoring 90.5000 to their rival’s total of 89.1667.

Yelyzaveta Yakiino and Yana Nariezhna of Ukraine finished third with 88.6667. 

Italy were hoping to cement their second place position and looked to have taken a big step towards earning the overall silver medal after Minisini Giorgio and Perrupato Mariangela secured gold in the mixed duet competition with 89.1667.

It would prove the only event that China would fail to secure a podium position in as Ukraine’s Kateryna Reznik and Anton Timofeyev finished second on 86.6667, with Spain’s Pau Ribes Culla and Betra Ferreras Sanz third on 86.5000.

However, Chinese success resumed on the second day of competition after they claimed victory in the women’s free combination event with a total of 89.666, while Russia scored 86.8334 to finish as the runners-up ahead of Japan by by 0.5001.

There was little doubt that the Chinese team would secure the World Trophy and they sealed the victory in style by scoring 91.8334 to win the free team programme, giving them an overall tally of 363.3333 for the competition.

Italy took silver with 91.1667 and Japan picked up bronze with 86.5000.

The battle for the remaining podium places had been fierce throughout the duration of two-day event, despite China’s dominance, but Russia were able to secure silver having totalled 349.5000 across their performances.

Ukraine took the bronze medal with a tally of 347.8335, leaving Italy as the team to narrowly miss out on the podium having totalled 346.3333.

A total of 13-teams had competed in the 10th edition of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Trophy, with China’s triumph seeing them become the most successful team with a total of four overall crowns.

Spain have now won the second most titles with three, while Russia have claimed two victories and Canada earned the title in front of their home crowd in 2009.
