Double Olympic champion Sang-Hwa Lee fended off the challenge of her two American rivals to win the women's 500 metres at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Cup in Heerenveen today.

The South Korean, winner over the distance at Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014, clocked a time of 37.59 sec to triumph on the Dutch track ahead of US stars Brittany Bowe and Heather Richardson-Bergsma.

Bowe was 0.27 back in second with Richardson-Bergsma, the overall World Cup leader, third with a time that was a further 0.34 adrift.

Meanwhile, Czech star Martina Sábliková continued her domination of the women's 3000m by maintaining her 100 per cent record at this year's World Cup.

The triple Olympic champion romped home with a time of 4 min 3.50 sec ahead of home favourite Annouk van der Weijden who recorded 4:05:39.

Olga Graf of Russia did enough for bronze as she finished in a time of 4:06:57.

Pavel Kulizhnikov remained unbeaten in the men's 500m as he sprinted home in 34.48 to finish ahead of compatriot Aleksey Yesin who was 0.17 adrift.

Alex Boisvert-Lacroix of Canada was third as he finished in 34.78.

Hosts Netherlands celebrated success as they claimed the men's team pursuit honours in 3:43:77 ahead of Norway and Russia respectively, while they took the plaudits again in the women's team sprint, winning in 1:29:23 ahead of Russia who were the only other country to finish.

In the men's team sprint, Canada's time of 1:19:75 saw  them home in front of the Russians and the Dutch.
