South Korea’s Eunhee Jeon was crowned women’s singles champion at the World Bowling Women’s Championships after dominating the gold medal match at the Khalifa International Bowling Center in Abu Dhabi.

Jeon had proved to be one of the most consistent players during the opening day of competition and she continued her run by achieving a score of 266 points to win her semi-final clash against Singapore’s Shayna Ng, who was only able to manage 238.

She was denied the opportunity to an all-South Korean final after Singapore’s Cherie Tan brushed aside the challenge of Yeonju Hwang in their last four tie, advancing with a score of 250.

Tan knew she would need to raise her game further to provide a significant threat to Jeon, however her standards dropped as she was only able to achieve a total score of 189.

It enabled Jeon to cruise to the title, which she sealed in style by scoring 279, her joint-highest total of the competition.

South Korean success continued as they claimed victory in the trios competition, but their team of Hyerin Son, Jinsun Kim and Seungja Baek were nearly eliminated at the semi-final stage by the United States.

Both Kelly Kulick and Liz Johnson scored 215, while Toronto 2015 Pan American Games’ singles champion Shannon Pluhowsky added 196 to the American team’s tally.

A superb performance from Son, who scored 248 points, proved enough to see her team advance to the final by a solitary point, having achieved a total of 627.

In the final they faced Singapore’s singles stars Tan and Ng, in addition to Hui Fen New, after they overcame England’s Danni Hopcroft, Jo Allsebrook and Lisa John in their semi-final by 625-567.

The South Korean team proved too strong for the Singaporeans in the final as, led by Baek’s score of 255, they achieved a total of 695 to their rivals 594 to secure the gold.

The women’s doubles competition is due to take place tomorrow.
