David Beckham was among the spectators on the fourth day of the ASEAN Para Games in Singapore today.

Beckham, the former England football captain and Manchester United and Real Madrid star, turned up at the five-a-side football at Marina Bay Sands where he met with fans and volunteers.

He then saw Thailand beat hosts Singapore 5-0 and Malaysia play out a goalless draw with Vietnam.

Beckham is a regular visitor to Singapore.

Last night, he was a surprise guest at the Singapore International Film Festival's Silver Screen Awards.

He was also there in April to shoot an advertising campaign for Singapore's tourist industry.

Perhaps his most memorable visit to Singapore was in 2005 when he was a leading part of the delegation that bid successfully for London to host the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Among those that Beckham met on this latest visit was Tan Chuan-Jin, the country's Minister for Social and Family Development and also President of the Singapore National Olympic Committee.

Beckham's appearance may have stolen the attention but there was also plenty of action elsewhere.

Home swimmer Theresa Goh Rui Si won the fourth gold medal of her ASEAN Para Games campaign today, taking top honours in the women’s 200 metres freestyle S5 with a Games record time at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.

The 28-year-old touched home in 3min 38.04sec to smash her own previous Games record mark by 13 seconds and add to her titles from the 50m butterfly S5, 100m breaststroke SB4 and 100m freestyle S5.

Runner-up Nguyen Thi Den was well over a minute behind Goh, while fellow Vietnamese Danh Thi My Thanh had to settle for bronze.

Vietnam still had a good, however, as they claimed four gold medals today to propel them to the top of the swimming medal standings.

Two of them came courtesy of Vo Huynh Anh Khoa, winner of the men’s 100m butterfly S9 in 1:06.18 before setting a Games record time of 4:55.70 to top the men’s 400m freestyle S9.

Pham Anh Tu triumphed in the men’s 400m freestyle S11 with a Games record time of 5:37.82 and there was also success for Vietnam in the men’s 4x50m medley relay, clocking 2:52.56.

Vietnam now have a total of 37 swimming medals, with Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore the closest to matching their haul of 12 golds on nine apiece.

In athletics Indonesia lead the way after adding nine gold medals to their tally today, making it 19 in all.

The country’s standout performance came from Felipus Kolymau, who set a Games record and Asian record time of 49.57 to win the men’s 400m T20.

A further three Games records were broken by Indonesian athletes, starting with Mulyono, who posted 13.78 in the men’s 100m T42.

Yahya registered a throw of 39.41 metres to set a new mark in the men’s discus F44.

Timin, meanwhile, crossed the men’s 1,500m T37 finish line in 5:24.62 to put his name into the history books.

Elsewhere on the third day of medal-winning action, Thailand continued its domination of the shooting events by securing the two golds on offer.

In the R5 10M air rifle prone mixed SH2 event, World Cup silver medallist Chatchai Senachan topped the podium with a score of 210.3 points, as compatriot Tanong Channam finished second on 209.3.

Thailand's Atidet Intanon, Woraprat Sirisak and Jiradet Rodtapao occupied the top three places in the R3 10m air rifle prone mixed SH1 competition, with scores of 210.2, 206.7 and 185.9 respectively, but ASEAN Para Games rules meant bronze was awarded to Indonesia's Aris Haryadi on 165.4.

Indonesia head the overall medal standings with 46 golds, 45 silvers and 27 bronzes, followed by Thailand with 42 golds, 40 silvers and 45 bronzes.

Action in Singapore is due to continue tomorrow with the Games set to run until Wednesday (December 9).
