Malaysia won seven golds on the second day of athletics action at the ASEAN Para Games in Singapore to keep the pressure on medal table leaders Thailand.

Thailand head the overall medal table with 27 golds, 26 silvers and 29 bronzes, but Malaysia have the edge in athletics with 12 golds to Thailand’s 11.

In the morning session at the Singapore National Stadium, Malaysia’s Mohd Hisham Bin Khaironi won the men’s javelin F12/13 with a throw of 47.64 metres before compatriots Amir Firdauss Bin Jamaluddin and Hemala Devi Eni Kutty claimed the men’s long jump F37/38 and women’s shot put F11/12, posting 5.09m and 10.24m respectively.

There was further success for Malaysia in the afternoon as Umi Syuhadah Binti Idris won the women’s shot put F35/36/37 with a throw of 7.59m and Doriah Poulus won the same sport’s F42/43/44 event after registering 8.90m.

Malaysia’s golden day was complete after Felicia Binti Mikat claimed the women’s 400m T13 title with a time of 1min 11.96sec and Muhamad Ashraf Bin Muhammad Haisham set a Games record time of 2:03.67 on his way to winning the men’s 800m T46.

Meanwhile, in the pool, hosts Singapore showed their strength by topping four podiums at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.

Tan Eng Kiong Benson successfully defended his men’s 100m freestyle S14 crown with a time of 1:01.74 and then set a Games record time of 2:14.94 to completely dominate the men’s 200m freestyle S14.  

He had to settle for silver in the men’s 50m butterfly S14 as Malaysia’s Yoong Chung Wei took gold in 30.49, but there were also victories for fellow Singaporeans Han Liang Chou, in the men’s 50m breaststroke SB14 with a Games record time of 35.23, and Goh Rui Si Theresa, in the women’s 50m butterfly S5 with a time of 1:03.92.

Today’s powerlifting action saw Vietnam triumph on three occasions with Le Van Cong and Nguyen Binh An emerging victorious in the respective men’s 49 kilogram and 54kg and Le Thi Anh Nga coming out on top in the women’s 45kg.

Thailand’s all-round qualities were again on display in shooting where Somporn Muangsiri won the P2 10m air pistol women SH1 and Chutima Saenlar the R2 10m air rifle women standing SH1.

Action in Singapore is due to continue tomorrow with the Games set to run until December 9.
