Defending champions Sweden reached the men’s final of the Le Gruyere European Curling Championships by claiming a dramatic extra end victory over rivals Norway in Esbjerg, Denmark.

The Swedish team, led by skip Niklas Edin, had looked on course for the gold medal match when they held a 5-2 advantage heading into the seventh end of the tie, but their lead evaporated when Norwegian skip Thomas Ulsrud played an excellent draw shot to score three points.

However, just two ends later Edin was able to put his team back in front by scoring two, but Norway were able to hold their nerve in the tenth to level the scores once more to force an additional end.

Crucially Sweden held the advantage of being able to throw the last stone and Edin used it full effect, by hitting out one of the Norwegian strones from the house to secure a 8-7 victory.

"I'm really glad we could step it up and play as well as we have in the previous championships and the Worlds last year,” said Edin afterwards.

“I'm really proud of my whole team for their shot-making and effort.

“We haven't played as well as we'd hoped, and Norway went 9-0 in the round-robin, it's the best we've seen them play in a while.

“We knew we'd have to make almost every shot to win this game.”

While the first semi-final had proved a closely fought affair, the second saw Switzerland earn a dominant win over Finland.

The Finnish team looked to have hauled themselves back into the contest in the fifth end when their skip Aku Kauste scored two points to leave them trailing 4-3, having endured a poor start to the match.

Switzerland’s Benoit Schwarz though helped his team to secure three points in both the sixth and eighth ends to force Finland to concede the match, with the score standing at 10-4 to their opponents.

There was further disappointed for the Finnish team as they were comfortably beaten 7-4 by Norway in the bronze medal match.

However their women's squad, led by skip Oona Kauste, held their nerve to in the final end of their bronze medal tie against the host nation Denmark to secure a narrow 10-8 victory.

The women's final between Russia and Scotland is set to follow the men's gold medal match tomorrow.
