Roles within Algeria’s various sporting federations will be offered to retired athletes as part of a new initiative in the nation, it has been announced following the first-ever Forum of Algerian Athletes.

The event, held by the Algerian Olympic Committee (COA) in Algiers, brought together competitors, technical staff, Presidents of federations and doctors to discuss several issues relating to athletes in the African country.

It was attended by COA President Mustapha Berraf, who is also a vice-president of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, while Olympic boxing bronze medallist Mohamed Allalou was among a host of athletes to take part in the forum.

One of the key topics discussed was what the future holds for athletes once they retire from professional sport.

Several recommendations were made as a result of the event, which was seen as productive by the respective attendees.

National sports federations were asked to set up an Athletes Commission in the country, while it was also recommended that both men and women should hold leadership positions.

“I was like you and I fully understand the post-career concerns of athletes, even for those who are still active,” Berraf said.

“I can announce that after a period of training, former athletes will have their seats in the various sports federations.

“From volleyball players and handball players who followed a degree course and have achieved the first diplomas and 2nd and 3rd degrees signed by the President of the International Olympic Committee, and the Presidents of International Federations, the same operation is underway for basketball and will materialise at the end of this year.”

Retired Algerian handball player Zhor Guidouche, a former director of sports for the COA, was hailed as a perfect example of how sportspeople can transition into roles within governance.
