Britain’s Paul Drinkhall is targeting success at next year’s Olympic Games after he claimed men’s singles gold at the Rio 2016 table tennis test event with victory over home favourite Thiago Monteiro at the Riocentro Pavilion.

Drinkhall, the only non-South American player to enter the Aquece Rio competition, was in fine form throughout before he comfortably beat Monteiro in straight games 11-5, 12-10, 11-7, 11-7.

The Briton, part of the English team who earned silver at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, had earlier ousted another Brazilian in Cazuo Matsumoto in a gruelling seven-game semi-final battle.

Gaston Alto clinched bronze with a 7-11, 11-3, 8-11, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10, 12-10 success over Matsumoto.

“It was very good for me to come and see the conditions in Rio,” Drinkhall, fourth at the inaugural European Games in Azerbaijani capital Baku in June, said.

“The Brazilian team is very good, they have good players like Thiago and Cazuo, against Cazuo I had a very tough semi-final; also Thiago is a very difficult opponent but I managed to keep on top of my game.

“When you win of course it is easy to be satisfied but that’s really my feeling.

“Hopefully I am going to be here next year and again with a positive result.”

International Table Tennis Federation Latin American Championships champion Lin Gui of Brazil reigned supreme in the women’s event as she overcame the challenge of compatriot Letica Nakada in the final.

Lin, who represented her country at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, breezed to the title with a commanding 11-3, 11-5, 11-7, 11-5 success.

Her toughest obstacle came at the last four stage where she came up against number three seed Bruna Takahashi, also of Brazil, but she was able to squeeze through before dismantling Nakada in the gold medal match.

“I am very pleased with my performance,” she said.

“Despite the fact we don't have a great number of players at Aquece Rio, playing against the best Brazilian players is tough, mainly because we practise together on many occasions.

Ligia Silva, who lost the bronze medal match to Bruna Takahashi, praised the venue which will play host to table tennis events at Rio 2016.

“I think all changes are valid to promote the sport, the green floor is great, it has to do with our country and I support all the efforts to make table tennis more popular and beautiful,” she said.

“All the procedures are very similar to the Olympic Games, the schedule, racket control, entrance, in my opinion it has been a great test before receiving all the countries in 2016.”
