Britain’s Gordon Reid has surged to the top of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Wheelchair Doubles Tennis Rankings after he partnered Frenchman Michael Jeremiasz to the Wheelchair Doubles Masters title in Mission Viejo, California.

Their victory was their first Masters crown and helped Reid usurp Stephane Houdet of France at the summit of the rankings.

Moving to the number one spot continues the superb year for the Briton after he teamed up with Houdet to win the US Open men’s doubles competition in September, which came after Reid and Japanese player Shingo Kunieda reigned supreme at Roland Garros in Paris earlier in the year.

The Anglo-French duo were in superb form in California, winning all three of their group stage matches before sweeping aside Dutchmen Tom Egberink and Maikel Scheffer in the last four

That win set up a meeting with Houdet and Belgian partner Joachim Gerard, the defending champions, and Reid and Jeremiasz were able to get revenge for their defeat to the pair in last year’s final as they claimed a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 victory to take the title.

"I’m really pleased to win the title after coming close last year," Reid said.

"To reverse the result is really satisfying and to become doubles world number one is an added bonus.

"This week also gives me added confidence for the NEC Masters in London next month and now I’ve got my second Doubles Masters title I really want to add the singles equivalent in front of a home crowd."

Jiske Griffioen of The Netherlands leads the way in the women’s rankings following her triumph alongside compatriot Aniek Van Koot at the event in Mission Viejo.

The formidable Dutch duo proved too strong for Japan’s Yui Kamiji and Jordanne Whiley of Britain, clinching the Wheelchair Doubles Masters crown with a 7-6, 6-4, success.

In the latest rankings published by the ITF, Whiley, who became the first Briton to win a Grand Slam women’s singles title at the US Open, moves down to third, with Kamiji fourth.

"I'm not happy with my performance this week," Whiley said.

"I need to get back to work and some good training and make sure I’m as well prepared as possible for the NEC Masters on home soil in London."

The NEC Wheelchair Masters event takes place from November 26 to 30 and features men’s and women’s singles as well as a quad doubles competition.
