Pyeongchang 2018 have stepped up their preparations for the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games by appointing Hyungkoo Yeo as secretary general with immediate effect.

Yeo, a former Government official having served as a second vice minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in South Korea, will be tasked with ensuring all facilities for the Games, such as the Olympic Stadium and competition venues, are completed on time.

He will also be charged with overseeing other vital issues in the build-up to the first Winter Olympics and Paralympics to be held in the nation including marketing, transport and accommodation.

Yeo has already started work in the position, attending a meeting in South Korean capital Seoul this morning, and he is due to embark on a tour of the construction sites and venues in order to receive updates on their progress.

Young-jin Kwak was secretary general in an acting capacity before Yeo took up the permanent role.

“It is a great honour to be appointed as secretary general,” Yeo said.

“Personally however, I feel a greater responsibility than joy for the honour since there is a lot of work to be done in order to successfully host the Games in 2018.

“The goal of Pyeongchang 2018 is to stage successful Games for the world, and therefore all staff members must do their best in order to achieve that goal.

“I will also endeavour to work to enhance national competitiveness and improve Korea’s performance."

His appointment comes after International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission chair Gunnila Lindberg insisted she was “totally convinced” venues will be ready in time to stage Pyeongchang 2018 test events despite the hectic schedule.

A total of 28 test events will be held over the next two years, starting with an International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine World Cup and an FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Cup in February 2016.

“We are only two years away from the opening of the Games, and there are three months left to the start of the first test event which will serve as the cornerstone of success in 2018,” Yeo added.

“Throughout my 35-years of public service, I’ve always believed that the answers emerge on the spot, and I will also do the same for Pyeongchang 2018.”

Concerns have been prominent in the build-up to the Games, particularly regarding construction of venues and sponsorship, but these were allayed somewhat when IOC President Thomas Bach hailed the "great progress" Pyeongchang 2018 had made when he visited South Korea in August.

Organisers have also begun to bolster their sponsorship partners in recent months after signing deals with three of the country's biggest companies in Hyundai, Samsung Group and Korean Air.

Manufacturing giants SK Group, one of South Korea's largest conglomerates, are the most recent addition to the list of domestic sponsors for the event after a deal was signed with Pyeongchang 2018 in September.

Other local sponsors are law firm BKL, telecommunications provider KT, Youngone Outdoor's North Face brand, Pagoda Education Group and Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers, and it is hoped more will be unveiled soon.
