The United States-based National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) has announced telecommunications giants T-Mobile as an official sponsor.

The company will partner the National Tournament, due to take place in Louisville from April 7 to 10, and T-Mobile employees will be able to volunteer at various NWBA events at local and national level.

They join the likes of basketball provider Mikasa, wheelchair engineers Per4Max and healthcare company Sanford Health on the list of official partners of the NWBA.

“We are committed to aligning with companies like T-Mobile that value and recognise the potential of the wheelchair basketball community,” NWBA executive director Jim Scherr, former chief executive of the United States Olympic Committee, said.

“Having T-Mobile as a sponsor will help grow our pool of volunteers across the country.”

The NWBA, which is comprised of over 200 wheelchair basketball teams across 22 conferences and seven divisions was founded in 1948, will work with its various members to ensure they are getting the most out of T-Mobile’s lucrative sponsorship.

Officials for the organisation will also help integrate T-Mobile into the new season ahead of next year’s NWBA National Tournament, where the top teams from each division will battle it out for the title.

The announcement follows the NWBA signing a deal with the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the aim of attracting more young players to the game.

The NWBA intends to work with its existing teams who have an affiliation to the NBA - the world's premier basketball league - to become more involved with Jr. NBA programmes aimed boys and girls aged between six and 14.

The partnership will see additional resources provided to NWBA youth programmes with the Jr. NBA app and website, serving as the best sources of information for youth basketball players, parents, coaches and officials.
