Double Olympic champion Laura Trott of Britain produced another commanding display to claim gold in the women’s omnium event at the International Cycling Union (UCI) Track Cycling World Cup in Cali, Colombia.

Having established a dominant lead at the top of the standings at the halfway stage, Trott claimed third place in the time trial before coming home in second in the flying lap to further extend her advantage.

The Briton, also the reigning European champion in the discipline, wrapped up her victory by winning a lap and amassing a further five points in the sprint races to finish on a total of 213.

France's Laurie Berthon secured silver, a colossal 53 points adrift of Trott, with  American Sarah Hammer doing enough for third.

“We went into it thinking it was just a stand-alone points race,” Trott said.

“It's not very often you go into a World Cup with that sort of lead.

“We didn't want to take anything for granted, I'm here to learn.”

Elsewhere, Germany’s Kristina Vogel, world champion in 2014, reigned supreme in the women’s keirin as she sprinted to victory, edging China's Shuang Guo and Russian Ekaterina Gnidenko in a thrilling finish to the race.

Victor Manakov of Russia proved too strong for the rest of the field in the men’s omnium, though he had to hold off a late challenge from German Roger Kluge to seal a superb triumph, while Italy’s Elia Viviani was third.

The Russian rider ended the event on 182 points, just four in front of Kluge, with Viviani a further five points adrift.

There was more success for the Russian team as Denis Dmitriev powered to gold in the men’s sprint race, beating Dutchman Jeffrey Hoogland in the two-heat final with a thrilling late surge that ultimately proved enough to take the title.

The bronze medal contest was an all-German affair as Max Niederlag beat Maximilian Levy, keirin silver medallist at London 2012.

Germany cemented their status at the top of the medals table by winning the final event on the programme, topping the podium in the men’s Madison ahead of Spain and Switzerland, while hosts Colombia missed out on a medal as they could only manage fourth.

The UCI Track Cycling World Cup heads to Cambridge, New Zealand on December 5 and 6 before the third and final event takes place in Hong Kong on January 17 and 18.
