The Rio 2016 Barra Olympic Park, which is set to host 16 Olympic and nine Paralympic sports, is "more than 90 per cent complete" according to the host city’s Government.

Figures from the Government’s monthly update on the construction of new venues for next year’s Games suggest that work on the main competition cluster is now 92 per cent complete, up from 89 per cent last month.

They also indicate that 12 venues across the two Olympic Parks are at least 90 per cent complete, compared with six last month.

The announcement comes after reports claiming that the Brazilian city faced a "race against time" to be ready for next summer.

In Barra, good progress was recorded at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium, which is said to be 94 per cent complete, while the Future Arena, the temporary venue that will host the handball and goalball competitions, is up nine per cent from last month to 96 per cent.

It is claimed the Olympic Tennis Centre and the Rio Olympic Velodrome are 80 per cent and 70 per cent complete respectively, while work on the Athletes’ Village is said to be 97 per cent done.

Work is also said to be progressing well at Deodoro Olympic Park, the second largest competition cluster, where work on two venues - the Olympic BMX Centre and Mountain Bike Park - is complete.

The Whitewater Stadium, which will be home to canoe slalom events, is reportedly 98 per cent finished, while the Youth Arena is currently judged to be 68 per cent ready, with the Olympic Games due to start on August 5.

The Carioca Arena 3, which is due to host fencing and taekwondo before staging Paralympic judo competition, is considered the most complete competition venue in the Barra Olympic Park at 97 per cent.

It is closely followed by the Carioca Arena 2, with the Olympic judo and wrestling venue ranked at 96 per cent, while Carioca Arena 1, which will host basketball, is claimed to be 94 per cent ready to welcome the world’s top teams.

The Games’ golf course, located at Reserva de Marapendi, has been one of the more controversial venues with environmentalists complaining that the construction was damaging the local nature reserve, but is seen as being two per cent away from being finished as it was last month.

The International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre are deemed to be at 97 and 90 per cent respectively, while the hotel in the Barra Olympic Park is considered to be 84 per cent ready.
