Hosts India were the dominant force at the 2015 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Pune, claiming a total of seven gold medals across the men’s and women’s categories.

Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sukhen Dey triumphed in the men’s 56 kilograms division, beating Jamjang Deru and Malaysia’s Azroy Hazalwafie Muhammad.

In the men’s 62kg class, Lather Deepak edged Malaysia’s Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamad and Sri Lanka’s D.K.T.V.K. Palagasinghe, second and third respectively.

Sathish Kumar Sivalingam, also a Glasgow 2014 gold medallist, held off nearest challengers Francois Etoundi of Australia and Toua Udia of Papua New Guinea in the men’s 77kg category.

There was also success for Vikas Thakur at the expense of fellow countryman Venkat Rahul Ragala and Malaysia’s Bin Mohamad Khairulanuar in the men’s 85kg class.

A further three gold medals came the way of India on the women’s side, including one for Glasgow 2014 champion Sanjita Chanu Khumukcham, who led a one-two for her country in the 48kg class followed by Chanu Saikhom Mirabai.

Papua New Guinea’s Thelma Mea Toua had to settle for bronze, as did fellow countrywoman Dika Toua in the women’s 53kg category behind India’s Santoshi Matsa and Pramila Krisani, the gold and silver medallists.

Punam Yadav also struck gold for India, taking the women’s 63kg title with Bangladesh’s Mabia Aktar the runner-up and Wales’ Stephanie Sarah Owens in third.

Samoa finished second in the gold medal stakes, topping the podium in the men’s 94kg and women’s 75kg divisions through Siaosi Leuo and Mary Opeloge respectively. 

Malaysia’s Hafifi Bin Mansor Mohd came out on top in the men’s 69kg categor.

Kiribati’s David Katoatau and Nauru’s Itte Detenamo won the men’s 105kg and over 105kg crowns respectively.

As the sole competitor in the women’s over 75kg category, the Cook Islands’ Luisa Fatiaki Taitapu Peters claimed gold.

Fiji’s Apolonia Vaivai won  women’s 69kg crown.

Papua New Guinea is set to host next year's Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships after being chosen ahead of Fiji.
