World champions Australia brushed aside the challenge of Iran to win the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Asian Oceania Zonal Championship at the Chiba Port Arena in Japan today.

The Australian team lived up to expectations with a series of excellent performances in the 12-team tournament, including a 74-28 demolition of Thailand in the quarter-final and a 70-41 win over hosts Japan in their last four clash.

Those victories had ensured the team a spot at next year's Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where they will attempt to improve upon their bronze medal at London 2012.

Iran, who had also sealed a Paralympic berth, provided the world champions with a stern test in the early stages as they went into the half-time break only 36-29 behind.

Australia pulled away in the closing quarters, however, due to superb shooting from Tristan Knowles and Brent Stibners, which helped them emerge 78-60 winners.

Japan ensured that they would join Australia and Iran at Rio 2016 after defeating South Korea in the bronze medal match, which offered the third and final berth.

The match had looked in the balance at the halfway mark with the Japan holding a narrow 38-32 lead, but they were able to build their advantage in the closing stages  to secure a comfortable winning margin of 80-56.

While Australia’s men were celebrating victory and passage to Rio 2016, their women’s team missed out on a place at next year’s Games after falling short in the three-team women’s tournament.

The one spot at the Games came down to a clash between Australia and China.

After an even opening quarter to the match, however, it was the Asian nation who took control and sealed gold with a 59-43 victory.
