Great Britain name squad for home World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow

Hosts Great Britain have confirmed their squad for the World Gymnastics Championships which are due to begin this month at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow.

Four of the country's Olympic medal winners from their home London 2012 Games have been named in a six-strong men's team with Max Whitlock, Louis Smith, Kristian Thomas and Daniel Purvis all being part of the GB side who clinched team bronze in the capital.

Whitlock, the all-around silver medallist at last year's World Championships in Nanning, China, also won pommel horse bronze in London, while Smith clinched silver in the same discipline to add to the bronze he won four years previously at Beijing 2008.

Smith is also a double European and double Commonwealth champion, while he has a silver medal and two bronzes in his World Championships collection.

European floor champion Thomas won bronze in the vault at the 2013 World Championships in Antwerp while British champion Purvis will compete in front of a home Scottish crowd in the 2014 Commonwealth Games host city.

The quartet will be joined by European junior all-around champion Nile Wilson and English all-around winner Brinn Bevan.

Meanwhile, the women's squad will feature two-time Commonwealth gold medallist Rebecca Downie, with the 2008 Olympian, also a European bars and beam silver medallist, set to compete alongside younger sister Ellie, who won European all-around bronze this year and will be making her World Championships debut.

Quadruple Commonwealth Games gold medallist Claudia Fragapane will return to the venue where she collected that haul, while World University champion Kelly Simm and triple Commonwealth winner Ruby Harrold will also compete alongside British champion Amy Tinkler, another debutante.

Downie, Fragapane, Simm and Harrold were all part of the England team which won Commonwealth Games gold at Glasgow 2014.

Charlie Fellows will travel to Scotland as reserve with a men's replacement to be confirmed later this week.

The Championships are set to take place between October 23 and November 1 with more than 500 gymnasts from 80 countries set to be involved at an event which will see Rio 2016 qualification spots up for grabs.

Men's head coach Eddie Van Hoof said: "The team reflects the great strides made by the Great Britain’s men’s gymnastics programme with a real blend of experience and youth in our team.

"The primary aim for Glasgow is Rio qualification but a home World Championships with the fantastic home crowd also gives extra motivation for individuals to really make their mark.”

Teams which finish in the top eight in the qualifying rounds in Glasgow will book their tickets for next summer in Brazil.

Britain's women’s head coach Amanda Reddin said: “The British girls are fully prepared and ready to aim for Rio.

"The girls we have selected blend a mix of great experience with some younger faces who have already proven themselves in major championships.

"For Becky, Claudia, Ruby and Kelly it’s a return to the Hydro Arena where they’ve all experienced great successes last summer, and these girls all competed at last year’s World Championships where the team placed sixth in China.

"For Amy and Ellie this is their first World Championships but both showed at the European Championships that they can excel at this level.

"We’re all excited to get to Glasgow and begin the competitions knowing that we will have amazing support from the home crowd who can help give us that extra edge as we fight for Olympic places.”
