American athletes claimed two gold medals in Para-athletics events at the 2015 International Military Sports Council (CISM) World Games while fencing and shooting medals were also claimed in the South Korean city of Mungyeong.
Robert Brown was the first US Para-athlete to secure gold after finishing the A-Class 100 metres final in a time of 12.50 seconds, with India’s Gunasekaran Anandan and France’s Benjamin Atgie completing the podium in times of 12.55 and 14.67 respectively.
Brown’s triumph was replicated by his compatriot Ivan Sears in the D-Class competition as he completed the 100m distance in 16.25 to edge out The Netherlands’ Jacky Pastora for gold, with the American’s rival finishing in 17.93.
An American hat-trick in the Para-athletics events was denied after France’s Alain Akakpo produced the fastest time in the B and C-Class final after crossing the line after 12.09 seconds, with Germany’s Tim Focken and Maik Mutschke securing the remaining medals after posting times of 12.93 and 14.27.
In the able-bodied track events Bahrain’s Elhassan Elabbassi claimed the men’s 10,000m title in 27min 41.76sec, while Ukraine’s Nataliia Lupu won the women’s 800m in 1:59.99 and Kenya’s Pauline Korikwiang secured gold in the women’s 5,000m after clocking a time of 15:23.85.
The KAFAC Indoor Tennis Courts provided the location for the fencing competitions with China’s Zhen Li winning the men’s epee title after a 15-9 victory over France’s Daniel Jerent, while the beaten semi-finalists Hugues Boisvert-Simard of Canada and China’s Guojie claimed bronze medals.
The women’s foil event also took place with Russia’s Inna Deriglazova emerging victorious after she saw off the challenge of Vale Cipriani of Italy by a score of 15-9 in the gold medal match.
Elsewhere the shooting finals saw medals spread across several nations as Russia claimed the women’s 50m prone team gold after achieving a score of 1860.2 to finish ahead of Thailand, who ended on 1855.6.
Norway were triumphant in the 300m Standard Rifle 3 Position after their score of 1740-59x proved enough to defeat Austria and South Korea, with the silver and bronze medallists ending with totals of 1729-45x and 1726-58x respectively.
