Host nation Cameroon maintained their unbeaten Women’s AfroBasket group stage record as they delighted the home crowd by beating South Africa 78-51 in Yaounde.

After an even start to the contest where the South African side more than held their own, Cameroon were able to take control of proceedings as they established a 31-19 lead at half-time.

Backed by raucous support inside the Palace de Sports arena, Cameroon then went on to record their fifth straight victory to set up a meeting with Egypt in the last eight.

Ramses Lonlack was the star performer for the Cameroonian side as she racked up a total of 18 points, with South African Elle Moutlatse’s 13-point haul proving in vein as the hosts secured top spot in Group A.

Defending champions Angola bounced back from their shock defeat at the hands of the Egyptians yesterday in style as they thrashed Guinea 89-47 in Group B.

The Angolan team, seeking a third consecutive AfroBasket title, dominated the match throughout and at one stage led by as many as 49 points against a hapless Guinean outfit.

Nadir Manuel top-scored for the 2013 gold medallists with 21 points despite starting on the bench and her side will go on to face Gabon in the quarter-finals on Thursday (October 1).

Nigeria ensured they finished the group phase of the competition, which also serves as a qualifying tournament for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, in ominous form as they picked up their fourth straight win by beating Algeria 79-49.

In a commanding performance from the two-times champions, three of their players scored 10 points or more as they proved too strong for an Algerian side who were seeking their first win of the event.

The result saw Nigeria, whose only loss in the group stage came against Angola in their opening game, finish second in Group B.

They will entertain Mozambique in the quarter-finals.

Elsewhere, 10-times champions Senegal produced a dominant display on their way to ousting Egypt 84-72 in Group B, while Kankou Coulibaly’s 19 points inspired Mali to a 73-55 victory over Uganda in Group A.

The two hotly-fancied teams will now battle it out for a place in the semi-finals in the pick of the quarter-final clashes.
