International Boxing Association (AIBA) vice-president Timur Kulibayev has reportedly been elected President of the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan at elections held in Almaty today.

Kulibayev, a high profile businessman who is the son in law of the Central Asian nation's President Nursultan Nazarbayev, will replace Temirhan Dosmuhambetov, who had occupied the role since 2006.

The 49-year-old from Almaty, the AIBA vice-president responsible for the governing body's Pro Boxing competition, is also President of the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation and of the Sports Confederation of Combat and Strength Sports.

Away from sport, he has served as chairman of the Management Board of Samruk-Kazyna National Welfare Fund, the main sponsor of Almaty's bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics this year.

Despite that bid ultimately narrowly missing out in a two-horse race against Chinese capital Beijing in elections held during the IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur on July 31, the next four years is an important period for Kazakhstan.

Next year's Olympic Games in Rio will be followed by the 2017 Summer Universiade in Almaty.

According to website Tengrinews.kz, Dariyan Abulgazin was also elected secretary general at the body's Congress in the capital city today, while London 2012 Boxing champion Serek Sapiyev retains his place on the Executive Board.

Almaty 2022 vice-chairman Andrey Kryukov was appointed vice-president along with Kairat Boranbayev and Askar Mammin.
