The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has provided a cash injection of AU$3.5 million (£1.6 million/$2.5 million/ to the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) ahead of Rio 2016, it has been announced.

The one-off investment includes a loan of AUS$2.5 million (£1.1 million/$1.8 million/€1.6 million), with the rest provided as a grant to help the team in their preparations for the 2016 Paralympic Games in the Brazilian city.

It comes after the APC endured financial problems following London 2012, prompting the organisation to seek the help of the ASC to establish reform.

As well as the investment of the ASC, the APC also announced it has appointed four new members to its Board of Directors.

The general manager, people and culture at Geelong Australian Football League (AFL) club Rosie King joins John Hartigan, former News Limited chief executive, Jock O’Callaghan and Helen Nott on the list of newly-appointed members.

The development follows Lynne Anderson becoming the new chief executive of the APC.

“The APC has undergone significant operational change in recent months and I am confident that the appointment of our new Board Directors will further aid us in our push towards advancing Australia’s Paralympic team,” APC President Glenn Tasker.

“Our new directors and our new chief executive bring with them skills and views which will only strengthen the organisation.

"Together with our existing directors and their wealth of experience, I believe we have the ingredients to drive our movement forward.

“I would like to take the opportunity to express our thanks to the Australian Sports Commission for the financial assistance and organisational support they have provided.

“This gives us the ability to continue to fully focus on our preparations for Rio and raise the remaining funds to deliver a successful Australian team.”

Along with the significant financial contribution to the APC, the ASC are expected to pump around AUS$12 million (£5.5 million/$8.5 million/€7.6 million) in grants into National Sporting Organisations in order to help develop the performances of the nation’s para-athletes over the next two years.

The APC have also announced that their uniform for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games will be woven with indigenous artwork thanks to design company Balarinji.

“After consulting a number of Paralympians from the London 2012 Team, the APC decided that including an Indigenous element to the uniform would not only celebrate Australia’s rich culture and heritage, it would give Australia’s athletes a sense of pride as they too become part of Australia’s history,” Australia’s Paralympic Games Chef de Mission Kate McLoughlin said.
