Britain's Olympic champion Andy Murray thrashed Australia's Bernard Tomic in straight sets to book his country a place in the Davis Cup final for the first time since 1978.

After winning yesterday's key doubles clash with brother Jamie against Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth in five sets, Andy was in no mood to hang around as he secured the point Britain needed to advance in Glasgow.

The Scot eventually came through 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 to secure an unassailable 3-1 lead for his team in the tie.

Britain haven't been in a Davis Cup final since 1978 and haven't won tennis' national team competition since 1936.

In this year's final they will face Belgium whose semi-final against Argentina went to a deciding rubber.

Argentina led 2-1 overnight in Brussels but David Goffin saw off Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 to bring things level for the Belgians.

Steve Darcis then completed the comeback by beating Federico Delbonis 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 for a 3-2 overall victory and a final berth.

Belgium have only been in the final once, when they were runners-up more than a century ago in 1904.

Meanwhile, in World Group play-off matches the Czech Republic completed a 3-1 win over India while Switzerland were 4-1 winners over The Netherlands.

Italy beat Russia 4-1, the United States saw off Uzbekistan 3-1, while Poland beat Slovakia 3-2.

Germany came through against Dominican Republic, 3-1, and Croatia beat Brazil by the same scoreline.
