The Algerian Olympic Committee (COA) has announced that the city of Oran will host the 2021 Mediterranean Games, 40 years after the country's capital Algiers hosted the event.

The International Mediterranean Games Committee (CIJM), chaired by Algeria's Amar Addadi, confirmed the decision for the 19th edition of the Games at its General Assembly in Pescara, Italy.

Oran, which was competing with the Tunisian city of Sfax, won by a margin of 51 votes to 17.

"I'm happy to hear the news of selecting the capital of the west to host this Mediterranean competition," said Algerian President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

"It is an honour for both Oran and Algeria."

The Governor of Oran, Abdelghani Zaalane, added: "The city of Oran will be there.

"It is more than a challenge, it is a commitment for all of us, citizens and authorities, to be ready for hosting our guests in 2021."

The first and last time Algeria hosted the Mediterranean Games was in 1975, while the next edition of the Games is due to take place in the Spanish city of Tarragona in 2017.
