Germany posted two victories on the second day of the World Mixed Curling Championships to maintain their unbeaten start to the competition in the Swiss city of Bern and move to the top of Group B.

Having recorded a superb 10-2 win over Wales in their only tie yesterday the German team of Andy Kapp, Petra Tschetsch, Holger Hoehne and Pia-Lisa Schoell were bidding to maintain that level of performance in games against Australia and Spain.

Both matches though would prove to be difficult encounters with their match against Australia going the full eight ends.

However, the German team would ultimately emerge as 7-5 victors and they followed up that result with a low-scoring 4-2 win over Spain.

The Germans could be joined at the top of Group B by Canada, who have only played twice so far, after they recorded a 5-3 win over Israel to maintain their winning start to the tournament.

Hungary were also able to record two wins on the second day of the tournament as they saw off the challenge of Brazil 6-3 before beating their local rivals Austria 7-4 in the final session.

They share the Group D lead with Scotland after they inflicted a first defeat on the Estonian team with the tie ending 12-4, while elsewhere in the group the United States beat Turkey 7-3 which sees them boast a record of two wins and one defeat so far.

Defeat though is something that Russia and hosts Switzerland are yet to experience in Group C, with the latter picking up where they left off yesterday as their team of Michael Brunner, Briar Huerlimann, Celine Koller and Yannick Schwaller beat Slovenia 4-3.

“We want to win our group and we remain on course, but we also want to play better from game to game,” said Schwaller, the team’s skip, following the tie.

However, Russia look likely to be their biggest rivals for top spot in the group after they claimed a dominant 10-3 win over Kazakhstan, before edging out Poland 4-3.

Sweden are the only team in Group A who are yet to taste defeat after recording a 7-5 victory over Slovakia, while Italy and Lithuania posted their first wins of the competition with 5-3 and 6-5 triumphs over Belgium and Romania respectively.
