Tom Dumoulin has regained the leader's red jersey at the Vuelta a España after powering to individual time trial victory on stage 17 of the race in Burgos today.

The Dutchman takes over at the top of the overall classification standings from home favourite Joaquim Rodríguez after completing the 38.7 kiloemtres course in 46min 01sec.

This was more than a minute faster than second placed rider Maciej Bodnar of Poland as nobody else in the field was able to match his blistering pace.

Rodriguez was more than three minutes behind Dumoulin and slips to third overall, but Italian Fabio Aru limited the damage to his chances of overall glory as he was tenth quickest and now lies just three seconds behind as the leader's nearest rival.

Dumoulin, who races for Giant-Alpecin, has now held the race leader's jersey on three occasions during this year's Vuelta.

There was also an impressive ride by Movistar's Spanish rider Alejandro Valverde who came in four seconds behind Tinkoff-Saxo‘s Bodnar in third.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez is still on top in the points classification as he has 106 points ahead of Dumoulin's 104.

In the mountains classifciation, Spain's Omar Fraile is dominating with 82 points, 50 more than his nearest rival, Luxembourg's Frank Schleck.

There are four stages of this year's race remaining with a medium-mountain leg between Roa de Duero and Riaza scheduled for tomorrow, lasting 204km.
