Defending silver medallists Turkey made a strong start to their European Wheelchair Basketball Championships campaign today, surviving a stern examination to overcome The Netherlands 52-46 on a busy day at the University of Worcester in Britain.

The Turks, who agonisingly lost the 2013 final 59-57 to Britain in Frankfurt, dominated from the outset to take a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Dutch, whose last European medal was a silver behind hosts Italy in 2003, showed good fighting spirit, however, to hit back with consecutive baskets from Robin Poggenwisch.

Turkey led 27-17 at half-time before a stunning third quarter from the Dutch made it 38-35 heading into the final 10 minutes.

Mattijs Bellers briefly brought his team to just one-point behind, but gradually the greater quality of the Turks told as they held on for a six-point victory.

Elsewhere in the men's competition, 2011 and 2013 bronze medallists Spain faced a similarly tough test before defeating France 76-69.

Sweden beat 2009 winners Italy 61-44 while Germany were in rampant form in a 66-23 thrashing of Czech Republic.

There was more German success in the women's tournament as the team, whose six-tournament winning streak was ended by a single-point final victory for The Netherlands in 2013, showed ominous form with a 91-30 thrashing of Turkey.

Spain were also very impressive in a 75-15 win over Italy while 2013 bronze medallists and Britain used the home support to their advantage in cruising past France 79-37, in a repeat of the third-place playoff at the last three tournaments.

Britain's men were edged out in the final match of the event, being narrowly beaten 85-73 by Poland.
